Spinergy Wheels

I'm recently back from one of those bucket-list rides we cyclists dream about: all 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway over 7 days. Me and my riding buddy expected long hard days in the saddle, trained for months, and completed a few centuries and gran fondos leading up to it. In retrospect, however, we had no idea the epic adventure that would ensue. We took spare Xaero and Z-Lite wheels just in case, and set up for bad weather and rough surfaces—and lucky we did. From the start atop Afton...

Spinergy was kind of a big deal in the 90’s. If you’re an OG you probably remember when PBO spoke technology was first introduced, but that was before my time. I googled images of Spinergy wheels from the 90’s and came across an amazingly over-the-top image of Mario Cipollini. There he was, standing shirtless in front of a Mercedes and a Harley Davidson proudly holding his Stars and Stripes Cannondale CAAD with Spinergy four-spoke wheels over his head—iconic! The four-spoke wheel was eventually...

When it comes to bike customization, you're not going to find much better than Jason's work at Chainline Bikes in El Cajon. We met up with Jason at this year's Sea Otter Classic. He was cruising around on one of his custom builds. "Fez" was the appropriately given name to this Kona Process 153 CR DL 29. The retro inspired lines and paint job made the bike stand out from the sea of bikes at the expo. Jason spoke to us about an upcoming build for Kona's Libre Gravel Bike. As we talked, the...

This year marks my fourth ride of the Belgian Waffle Ride. I first rode the event in 2015 when “gravel” was just becoming a dedicated bike category and my Supersix Evo with “wide” 25mm tires and tubes seemed to fit right in. By the end I had a dent in one of my rims and my arms were cramping, but I had finished. And I was hooked. The concept of “racing” across North County roads and trails provided the adventure that SoCal criteriums so severely lacked. Each year (aside from 2017 due to injury...

The Belgian Waffle Ride is commonly referred to as the Hell of the North (county), among other strong adjectives to describe its brutal nature. It is NOT often, if ever, referred to as a beginner's ride. But scarily enough, for me, that's what it was. I received my first bike (courtesy of Spinergy) at the ripe age of 40. I've ridden bikes before, but I've never owned one, so it wasn't something I did often. But on March 12th 2019, there it was at my desk, my first bike. A beautiful Canyon...
